About
The Department of English Language (DENG) is one of Koya University's first established departments. It has prepared future teachers, translators, interpreters, and researchers in the fields of linguistics and literary studies. The English department provides Bachelor of Arts (BA) degrees, Higher Diploma programs, Master of Arts (MA) degrees in English Literature and English Linguistics, as well as Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees in Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, and Literature. Reading, writing, listening, and speaking are four fundamental abilities that the department places a strong emphasis on. Graduates from the department will possess the ability to comprehend and create a wide variety of written communication, including both academic and professional texts in English, while using an analytical, critical, and logical approach. The Department of English at Koya University is dedicated to the comprehensive study of the English language, literature, linguistics, and translation. A variety of courses are available in the English Department program that will help students gain a deep understanding and appreciation for cultural and historical aspects of the English-speaking world. By taking such courses, students also enhance their critical thinking abilities and advanced communication skills. The English Department’s experienced scholars and educators strive to achieve excellence in community engagement, research, and teaching.
Vision
The English Department of Koya University aspires to be a leading institution for English language, literature, and linguistics. We desire intellectually engaged communities that provide excellent education, cultural engagement, and creative research. The department expects graduates to be language and literature specialists, critical thinkers, interpreter, and global citizens. Students in the English Language Department study linguistics as well as literary history. The department examines not just new works resulting from postmodernism, but also previous works that are part of the new tendencies, scrutinizing form characteristics, stylistic alterations, and differences in the use of the English language. The department's lecturers want their students to reason independently and engage in scientific analysis that results in advanced comprehension of the underlying mechanisms of language and language use by familiarizing them with a wide range of linguistic theories and the historical development of literary movements. The English Language Department assumes that this program will enable students to understand the fundamentals of a foreign language, examine various literary works, and learn as much as possible about linguistics and its tendencies. We assist students comprehend language richness, literary diversity, and as many linguistic viewpoints as feasible. Our purpose is to increase students' linguistic knowledge and diversity.
Mission
• The English Department at Koya University is an academic community involved in research and teaching in the fields of linguistics and literature. Therefore, one of the main missions of the department is to provide students with advanced, career-oriented, and up-to-date knowledge of such diverse fields and to make them professionals with comprehensive academic programs that promote advanced knowledge and critical thinking in the areas of linguistics and literature. It is an entirely research-intensive department, with its faculty staff publishing several highly educative studies in the fields of linguistics and literature.
• Another mission of the English Department is to encourage the study of the English language by fostering the development of all four disciplinary language skills and content knowledge, educating students on how these skills prepare them for a wide range of meaningful professional opportunities after graduation and how the English language intersects with various disciplines and professions.
• In order to facilitate the exploration of students' unique talents, we encourage extracurricular activities such as literary and linguistic projects, exhibits, poetry events, seminars, workshops, conferences and more. We strongly urge students at every educational level to engage in our local and global academic communities by actively attending guest lectures, conferences, and other multidisciplinary intellectual activities.
• The department of English also offers postgraduate programs, including MA and PhD degrees in linguistics and literature, which aim to provide students with particular major and in-depth knowledge in the discipline. Our mission is to train highly informed and professional graduates at multiple disciplines who could contribute creative researches with novel ideas for their wider academic community. Also, the department offers a Higher Diploma degree in English Language and Linguistics in order to provide graduate students with deeper knowledge in the fields of linguistics and literature.
